222 Mitchell

South Downtown, one of Atlanta’s most storied areas has now come full circle. Using a former industrial space that had been abandoned and fallen into disrepair, the area is now experiencing a resurgence with plans for development and adaptive reuse. Once realized, it will become an active commercial, retail and hospitality district and, ideally, a new destination for the city.

At its centerpiece, 222 Mitchell, the first building to be revitalized, which occupies a full city block and combines a turn-of-the-century brick structure with two mid-century modern buildings. With its proximity to the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the property seeks to capitalize from sports and entertainment enthusiasts and workers from nearby offices and serving as a destination for locals and tourists. Located on the 7th and 8th levels, 222 Mitchell will incorporate three dedicated hospitality spaces: casual dining, a lounge and rooftop bar, all of which can be accessed from individual entrances from the street.

The plan for the sophisticated High Horse Lounge draws inspiration from the city’s antebellum period when resident Samuel Mitchell traded his horse for five acres of land. This theme is playfully incorporated into the design of the 7th floor High Horse Lounge, a place for drinks and lite bites and, also, as a VIP event venue and destination for post-game or concert goers.

A horseshoe-shaped bar, complete with looping neon lasso, Hermès-inspired saddles and horse bits remind patrons of this fortuitous footnote in Atlanta’s history. An adjoining outdoor landscaped terrace offers spacious areas for seating and imbibing. With outdoor bar and a dedicated raised platform, the terrace is well suited for rentals and weddings. Planters, curated sculptures and an outdoor fireplace allow guests to take advantage of the temperate climate, all while enjoying views of the state Capitol Building and downtown skyline.

The 8th floor Thunderbird diner, named for the mythical Native American bird, is a more casual eatery whose menu and decor are steeped in 50s nostalgia. Visitors are greeted by a customized neon sign that opens onto the mid-century-modern-inspired setting. A wooden graphic grid houses lighting and fills the space while checkered stone underfoot provides an anchor. Plush banquettes trimmed in wood with marble topped tables are defined with curved bronze rails that separate diners. A graceful bar with pendant lighting and stools reinterprets the classic soda fountain. Just like the stadium it overlooks, the diner has a retractable roof, making it an all-weather venue.
