Union Channel

Gowanus is burgeoning, thanks to rezoning followed by the influx of those who want to experience “the greening of Gowanus” and reside near the canal for which it is named. While maintaining its early 20th century industrial feel, the neighborhood is au courant with nightlife, restaurants, art studios and galleries, a shuffleboard court and climbing wall. Located on a commercial street, 585 Union, a nine-story luxury rental, bares a dynamic façade that reflects the tempo of the streets and a host of desirable amenities. Along with its “fraternal twin,” 251 Douglass, residents are invited to access and use the amenity spaces in either building.

The exposed concrete and metal façade are outfitted with angular-shaped bay windows that break up the massing and give the structure a syncopated rhythm. Rising from a silvery gray base, the building switches to a lighter grey at the setbacks. With a nod to the storied metal bridge that crosses the canal, rivet heads are echoed on the metal panels of the façade. Beveled storefronts on the ground floor beckon pedestrians to enter from the highly trafficked retail corridor.

A curved canopy marks the entrance, and its shape continues into the lobby. Wood slats on the ceiling act as a guide to reach the reception desk and elevator banks. Design materials of white oak, grey travertine and dimensional tile create an ambiance of calm, while natural stone with green striations imbues nature into the interior. Tenant amenities include a fitness center and an area rarity: a roof top terrace with swimming pool.
